Former Food Service Worker Accused of Double-Dipping for 9 Years Investigators have arrested a former Central Islip, N.Y., food service worker on charges she worked for a tree service for nine years while collecting benefits from a 1993 injury. The New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF) said Carol Mitchell, 51, was arrested on Sept. 28 and faces a felony fraud charge under the New York Workers' Compensation Law. Investigators said Mitchell has collected $275 a week in benefits since she injured her back and hip in 1993. They said she returned to work nine years ago as office manager for a tree service company in Terrace, N.Y. NYSIF said she illegally collected $130,000 in benefits. The state fund estimated potential future savings at $161,000. NYSIF said Mitchell submitted numerous forms attesting to her inability to work while she was employed by the tree service. “NYSIF has mounted an aggressive campaign against workers’ compensation fraud for many years thanks to the cooperation and assistance of our investigative counterparts at other agencies and the law enforcement community throughout New York State,”  NYSIF Chief Deputy Director Francine James said. “Given the burden it places on honest businesses, consumers and taxpayers, workers’ compensation fraud is a crime that must be taken seriously.” Source: NYSIF Go Green… Help us go green by receiving your copy of The United Restaurants News by email.
